Board Meeting Minutes – October 2015

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM by President Mike Klineman.

Minutes: August 21, 2015 minutes were approved as amended. Final minutes are attached.


Guest Speakers/Janis McEldowney and Keri Marroquin

  • Human Resources (HR) support is designated to both the workforce and retirees. Significant growth in the retiree community is expected over the nex.t 10-25 years. The retiree community is expected to become more diversified and fragmented
  • The Staff Navigator, Kei Marroquin is responsible for transition to retirement. The pilot program appears to be working well.
  • In the future communication will be through electronic media such as emails, web sites and telephones and away from paper based communications.
  • Brochures, newsletters and other communications will be web based.       Awilda Bregand will be helping with a new website. Links can be emailed to Awilda at
  • Janette Brown suggests SRA involve non-retired staff. The presence of the Staff Assembly on the SRA Board is a step in the right direction.
  • Please contact Janis if you have on-going questions. HR is here to help retirees as well as employees.

Finance/Dick Martin:

  • Treasurer’s report: Dick circulated a detailed financial analysis of all income and expenses for the current fiscal year, as of 10/15/2015. Staff Retirement Association (SRA) finances are “in good shape!”, with strong membership growth The USC Credit Union accounts total $33,270.81, with $19,668.57 in the checking account.       The SRA share of the Endowment Account is $44,674.50 (to be updated by university shortly).
  • As of 10/15/2015 we had 119 renewals/new members for 2014-15; 268 renewals/new members for 2015-16 (plus 144 spouse members) with 47 delinquent. Four members renewed beyond 2016, and we have 175 Life Members.       Year to date for 2015-16 total funds received for dues, endowment and gifts are $11,137.00.00.
  • Dick noted that the 6 month Certificate of Deposit (CD) is expiring. He asked for a motion to roll the CD over. Moved by Linda K. Forman, seconded by David Tool. Passed unanimously.

Special Events/Dick Martin and Bill Givens:

  • Details are being finalized for the Los Angeles downtown theater tour with lunch at the newly renovated Clifton’s Cafeteria. A date will be announced soon. Publicity and reservations will be done by e-mail through the Emeriti Center’s (EC) system already in place.
  • A tour of the Los Angeles Asia museum is being organized. Details will be available on the EC web site.
  • SRA will attend the Spring Musical, A Little Night Music, on April 2, 2016 at 2:30 pm in the Bing Theater. Email SRA if interested.

Emeriti Center/Janette Brown:

  • An open house will be held in the new Emeriti Center quarters at the University Religious Center (URC) Friday, October 30, 2015 from 11 am to 2 pm.
  • Student workers are keeping track of room reservations at URC. They are housed in URC 106.

Vice President’s Report/Connie Horak:

  • Next year’s Staff Retirement lunch is scheduled for Thursday, March 17, 2016. The contract has been submitted, with help from Todd Dickey’s office.
  • A photographer has been hired.

Programs/Leslie Pittman:

  • December 4, 2015 has been confirmed for the Holiday Breakfast at Town and Gown. We will be collecting gently used business clothes. Entertainment by Parmer Fuller has been confirmed. Invitation post cards will be mailed this coming Monday.

Hospitality/Donna Simmons:

  • In the future SRA may need to increase its budget to cover USC service charges.

RFA/Bob Stallings:

  • The next Sherry Hour will be held Friday, November 13, 2015 from 3-5 pm at DML 291. For more information on the next RFA Sherry Hour and/or to make reservations go to: 13-2015/
  • The Provost’s Annual Faculty Retirement Recognition luncheon will take place Monday, November 9, 2015. Arrangements will be handled by the Provost’s Office.
  • A South Bay Region Social, hosted by Rich Sundeen will be held in Manhattan Beach in the spring.
  • Given the new status of the Emeriti Center (EC) a new Memorandum of Understanding among the EC, the RFA and the SRA will need to be developed.

Staff, Student and Community Opportunities and Activities Committee/David Tool:

  • A get-to-know you party for Trojan Friends Network will be held at the home of David Tool, Friday, October 24, 2015 at 5:00 PM.
  • David, the new USC representative to the Empowerment Congress North Neighborhood Development Council (ECNANDC), has asked to have USC students and local high school students appointed as representatives.
  • Safety issues at the corner of Portland and 23rd Street are severe. University Club Block Club is asking the city and USC to take actions to improve safety.
  • Work continues with the USC Vet Center to increase number of veterans with whom David works. Additional volunteers would be welcome. This would be a good opportunity for SRA and RFA.
  • Bob Scales 80th birthday party will be held on November 15, 2015 at the 24th Street Theater after the play (Man Covets Bird)

Encore & Trojans Helping Trojans/Carole Gustin:

  • Harriet Servis, assisted by Donna Simmons and Connie Horak convened a Trojans Helping Trojans meeting to plan for the future.

Emeriti College/Janette Brown:

Membership Recruitment and Renewals/Open

  • Per Dick Martin, the annual membership renewal letter has been edited to include more emphasis on new gifts and is under final review prior to distribution.

Internet/Web Site Content/Linda Forman:

  • John Casagrande and Bob Scales are working to consolidate the individual “web platforms” used by the various EC-related groups. Minutes of the SRA board meetings are current on the SRA website. Janette has asked all SRA members to review the web site and email suggestions for corrections and improvements to her, including the URL of the page that needs corrections.

Staff Assembly Report/David Donovan:

  • Lisa Machia presented at the last Staff meeting. Todd Dickey will present at the November 5, 2015 meeting.
  • Calendar year term Staff Assembly (SA) elections are coming soon. Half the seats come vacant each year (30 out of 60). After elections, officers are chosen by the SA.
  • The SRA/Staff Assembly relationship has been working very well.

  • Motion: The SRA Board of Directors approves payment of AROHE dues in the amount of $125.00. Moved by David Tool, Seconded by Harriet Servis, approved unanimously.
