Vice President’s Report Programs and Hospitality/Connie Horak, Donna Simmons, and Harriet Servis:

  • The June General Meeting will be held June 10, 2016 at the Allan Hancock Foundation Building. A brief business meeting will be followed by lunch and tours of the Allan Hancock Museum. Bree Russell from the Cinematic Arts Library will give an overview of this unique USC historical monument, followed by small group tours of the four-room museum. We will have brochures on hand detailing history of the Hancock family in Los Angeles and the Allen Hancock Museum. If possible, we will show video of a classic Huell Howser visit to the museum – To entertain and inform us as we enjoy our brown-bag lunch which will consist of a variety of half-sandwiches, salad, fruit and water. Of course, and most importantly we will enjoy each other’s company.
  • The September program has been arranged. Thom Mason, Professor of Jazz Studies, will speak on Frank Sinatra, hopefully in the Norris Theatre. The speaker’s fee will be $150. Rent is usually $350; Todd Dickey’s office will be contacted about possible support. Once details are confirmed, a Board resolution will be required.
  • This year’s Holiday Party is scheduled for Friday, December 2, 2016. An advance fee of $4,000, to be paid sometime shortly after the start of the new fiscal year, will be required to hold the date.
  • Planning is now underway for the 32nd Annual Staff Retirement Luncheon to be held in March 2017.

.RFA/Victor Webb:

  • With no permanent president, a small committee is being formed to suggest possible solutions. Ken Servis will serve at Treasurer for next year. Two new Caldwell scholars have been named. Nearly $2,000 has been raised, to date, from the “Day of Giving” campaign for the Caldwell Scholarship.

Staff Assembly Report/David Donovan (reported by Bill Givens):

  • The annual ice cream social was a great success on both campuses. Janette Brown spoke at last month’s meeting. An ad hoc committee has been formed to recommend staff members for scholarships toward degree programs at USC. The permit parking rate will be increased for next academic year.

Staff, Student and Community Opportunities and Activities Committee/David Tool:

  • No report since David Tool was on jury duty.

Internet/Web Site Content/Linda Forman:

  • Suggested changes to the SRA web site should be emailed to John Casagrande at jcasagr@usc.edu with copies to Janette Brown and the Emeriti Center (EC) staff at emeriti@usc.edu.

Benefits and Resources/Howard Saperston:

  • Janette Brown and Howard Saperston met in March to discuss reorganization of the Benefits and Resources Committee. The Committee will be inactive until reorganization is complete. Our best wishes to Howard for a full recovery.

Special Events/Dick Martin and Bill Givens:

  • A tour of the Los Angeles Asia museum is being organized, possibly on the 3rd or 4th Thursday in May. Details will be available on the EC web site. Suggested transportation is the Metro rail to the Memorial Park Station in Pasadena.
  • A docent led tour of the Metro red line art displays is being organized. It will start at the downtown Metro station and include a lunch at Mel’s Diner, before returning to the downtown stations.
  • Additional suggestions include: a tour of the Holocaust Museum at Fairfax Park, a visit to the Broad Museum followed by lunch at the family style restaurant next door; a small-group visit to the early California arts collection at the Jonathon Club hosted by member Mary Lane and organized by Harriet Servis.

Emeriti Center/Janette Brown:

  • Our student assistants are housed in URC 103. Emails to Janette Brown and/or the EC should also be copied to the student workers at emeriti@usc.edu, so that they can more effectively help Janette
  • Thanks to Jerry Walker’s efforts, Dagmar Halamka is presenting a six part “Joy of Law” workshop at the Palos Verdes library that started at the end of January.
  • SRA Membership Committee chaired by Connie Horak and Janette Brown will be looking for volunteers to make calls, and review new data, including information about retirees with 5-9.9 years’ service.
  • On May 4, 2016, USC Giving Day, a donation letter and email was sent by the EC to SRA, RFA and EC members soliciting donations to the Caldwell Scholarship fund. There has been a good response.
  • A volunteer’s web page is under development, possibly under the umbrella of Trojans Helping Trojans. We need to engage retired staff and faculty in the wide range of intergenerational volunteer activities available to us as USC retirees, focusing on the value of bringing together inter-disciplinary, inter-generational programs with our retirees as catalyst.

Emeriti College/Janette Brown:
