Others Present:

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM by President Mike Klineman.

Minutes: Minutes of the August 19, 2016 and October 21, 2016 were approved as corrected. Moved, Donna Simmons; Seconded, Howard Saperston.

President/Mike Klineman:

  • The President called the meeting to order and commented that the June 10, 2016 General Meeting was great.
  • Above and beyond the Staff Retirement Association’s (SRA) customary annual contributions to the Emeriti Center (EC), the SRA presented a check in the amount of $500 Janette Brown in loving memory of her parents and in honor of Janette’s dedicated service to the entire university community.

Finance/Dick Martin:

  • Treasurer’s report: Dick circulated a detailed financial analysis of all income and expenses for the current fiscal year, as of 111/17/2016. The USC Credit Union accounts total $31,415.73, with $17,753.71 in the checking account.       The SRA share of the Endowment Account is $52,762.05 (annual earnings rate = 4.50%). Year to date for 2016-17 total funds received for dues, endowment and gifts are $11,775.00
  • As of 11/17/2016 we had 284 renewals/new members for 2016-17 (plus 129 joint members) with 74 2016 delinquents. Three (3) members renewed beyond 2017, and we have 170 Life Members. Implementing the ability to pay for membership dues on-line is being considered.
  • John Hisserich called to report that he is still a signer on the Credit Union Account, and that the Credit Union currently has SRA documented as a student group. We may need to convert to the status of an unincorporated association, which will require ratification by the SRA Board for each Credit Union account.

Vice President’s Report Hospitality and Programs/Connie Horak, Harriet Servis, and Donna Simmons:

  • This year’s Holiday Party is scheduled for Friday, December 2, 2016 at the Town and Gown.

We got in early so our contract rate is the same ($21) as last year. A requisition for the advance fee of $4,500 has now been encumbered. A proof of the Holiday flyer was circulated for review and labels were affixed to the invitation post cards by the Board members at the end of the Board meeting. The committee needs the number of postcards to send out invitations to RFA prior to November 1. It has been noted that SRA charges for all guests (including spouses) who are not SRA members while the RFA subsidizes the cost for spouses of members.

  • Planning is now underway for the 32nd Annual Staff Retirement Luncheon to be held March 17, 2017. Upgrading the food offering is being considered. Dan Stimmler will speak.
  • A tour of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is being considered for Friday, June 16, 2017. Lunch would be in the Coliseum Board Room.
  • Some ideas for future general meetings were shared (e.g. Glorya Hoffman School of Dance visit, and USC Village tour).

RFA/Calvin Lau:

  • Calvin Lau is currently interim President for the Retired Faculty Association (RFA). The RFA Board is reviewing all governing documents.
  • Two (2) vacancies have been filled. Jerry Walker will serve as Vice President, and Jack Sanders as Secretary.
  • The RFA Board is focusing on “listening to its audience” as it develops its strategic plan.

Staff Assembly Report/David Donovan (reported by Bill Givens):

  • The newly elected president of the Staff Assembly (SA) will take office on January 1, 2017.
  • The relationship between SA and SRA gets better all the time.

Staff, Student and Community Opportunities and Activities Committee/David Tool:

  • David Tool has been appointed to the Board of Advisors for the USC Cohen Mental Health Clinic, due to his focus on veteran’s issues
  • There continues to be little USC volunteer participation related to student veterans. The USC Provost, with Janette Brown’s urging has identified two (2) faculty who will train on how to best relate to veterans. Long Beach State University has an established training program for faculty concerning dealing with veterans called Vet Ally.
  • Attended a variety of neighborhood council and veterans committee meetings and hosted a planning session lunch for six potential mentors who have volunteered for the USC mentoring program.

Internet/Web Site Content/Open:

  • The EC, RFA and SRA web sites are being actively updated. We need volunteers to review the changes. Please log-on and review for appearance, ease of use and content. Email suggested changes to the web sites to John Casagrande at with copies to Janette Brown and the EC staff at

Benefits and Resources/Connie Horak:

  • Based on Janette’s report the committee discussed transportation issues related to access to USC, including but not limited to, services such as Uber and Lyft.

Special Events/Dick Martin and Bill Givens:

  • A docent led tour of the Metro red line art displays was wonderful. The tour, which includes a one-day unlimited Metro pass, will likely be repeated.
  • The SRA has 50 tickets available for the April 8, 2017 matinee performance of the School of Dramatic Arts spring musical, which this year will be Evita.
  • A tour of the Los Angeles Asia museum is being organized. Details will be available on the EC web site. Suggested transportation for the tour is the Metro rail to the Memorial Park Station in Pasadena.
  • Additional suggestions include: a tour of the pipe organ at Disney Hall, a request by Christine Slade for a tour of a recycling facility (aka “Blue Bin”) a tour of the Los Angeles Federal Reserve Bank, a tour of the Holocaust Museum at Fairfax Park, a visit to the Broad Museum followed by lunch at the family style restaurant next door; a small-group visit to the early California arts collection at the Jonathon Club hosted by member Mary Lane and organized by Harriet Servis.

Emeriti Center/Janette Brown:

  • Our student assistants are housed in URC 103. Emails to Janette Brown and/or the EC should also be copied to the student workers at, so that they can more effectively help Janette.
  • Janette suggested the SRA Board review the SRA By-Laws, so that any needed changes would be ready to submit to the General Membership at the June 2017 meeting.
  • One of the AROHE sponsors is a travel agency that provides services to the University of California system. They have approached the EC. USC uses Trojan Travel. Janette will investigate.
  • A web based video of the November 16, 2016 Inter-professional Health Care Symposium, “Fit for Life”, is available at the EC web site. It is an example of collaboration between the EC and the Health Sciences Campus.
  • The Medicare Part D seminar is scheduled for Friday October 31, 2016. Last year participants saved an average of $625 per year on their pharmaceutical costs.
  • Another physical therapy workshop is scheduled for this spring, March 15, 2017.
  • Janette will meet with her supervisor next week. She would like feedback on issues of EC importance including volunteer activities and support for the university.

Emeriti Center College/Janette Brown:

  • The Emeriti Center College (ECC) is currently in limbo. The position of Director for the ECC is open. A volunteer is needed who can spend five (5) to ten (10) hours per week organizing and managing the EC. The EC web site has many details concerning EC programs available to all. See the web site at
